En un año dominado por la política y la pandemia, que obligó a instrumentar una compleja ceremonia virtual, HBO le ganó el duelo a Netflix con 30 estatuillas contra 21.
El rating fue el más bajo de la historia: 6.100.000 espectadores.El conductor Jimmy Kimmel los bautizó desde el estudio ubicado en el Staples Center de Los Angeles como Pandemmys y -más allá de aciertos y errores de producción- la de 2020 será recordada como una entrega única. Entre hallazgos y cierto inevitable caos, ABC sacó adelante una 72ª edicion que -entre emociones y glamour- tuvo múltiples llamados al voto en las inminentes elecciones presidenciales en Estados Unidos, discursos en sintonía con el movimiento Black Lives Matter y varias reivindicaciones hacia los trabajadores de la salud.
Si bien el show más premiado tomando en cuenta también todas las noches previas en que se otorgaron las estatuillas en los rubros técnicos y otros considerados “menores” fue la miniserie Watchmen con 11 (sobre un total de 26 nominaciones) y los galardones más prestigiosos (serie dramática) recayeron en Succession (7 en total), la nota la dio la serie canadiense Schitt’s Creek, que arrasó con los 7 principales rubros de comedia y acumuló 9 triunfos sobre un total de 15 nominaciones (caba aclarar que en los Estados Unidos está disponible en Netflix).
HBO obtuvo 30 estatuillas contra 21 de Netflix (en cantidad de nominaciones la N roja había liderado 160 a 107), pero ambas cadenas estuvieron por debajo de sus triunfos en 2019 (34 a 27 a favor de HBO). Para Netflix, la del domingo fue una pésima noche con solo dos victorias: Maria Schrader por la dirección de Poco ortodoxa y Julia Garner como actriz secundaria en Orzak. En el caso de HBO, también había obtenido 19 galardones en los rubros técnicos, pero en la ceremonia central sumó otros 11 y quedó como la gran triunfadora.
Amazon ganó apenas cuatro Emmys contra 15 de 2019 (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fue una de las series perdedoras), Apple TV+ logró su primer trinfo gracias a Billy Crudup como actor secundario en The Morning Show, mientras que Disney+ también debutó con 8 estatuillas, de las cuales 7 fueron para The Mandalorian. Pop TV fue la sorpresa con 10 rubros gracias al boom de Schitt’s Creek.
Mientras Zendaya hizo historia al ser la ganadora más joven de la historia por Euphoria (acaba de cumplir 24 años) y se registró un récord de nominados y ganadores afroamericanos, en la transmisión televisiva del domingo 20 se produjo un triunfo contundente de la TV por cable (20 estatuillas) contra apenas 3 de las plataformas de streaming y ningún reconocimiento de las cadenas de aire.
Pese a los esfuerzos, no se pudo contener la constante caída de la audiencia. Apenas 6,1 millones de espectadores vieron la entrega, menos que en 2019 (6,9 millones) y lejísimos de los casi 20 millones de la edición de 2013.
